Today we talked about culture. Culture is a sociologic concept. In the United States, we have a dominant culture called American Culture and several subcultures. One subculture which you and I ascribe to is Catholic Culture. Religion can profoundly influence culture.

Culture in the United States was also deeply influenced by religion. We acknowledge our country as having Judeo-Christian roots. Things like liberty and the dignity of human beings come from this tradition. The challenge has been that as our nation has become more secular we have lost the true meaning of these concepts.

The Catholic faith has always been a subculture. Remember that many of the early followers were persecuted and even martyred for their Christian faith and beliefs. At your confirmation, you were fortified with the gifts of the Holy Spirit to persevere under any adversity that you will encounter for your belief in Jesus Christ.

Using our faith and reason we will delve into this topic and plan for ways to protect ourselves in what can be a hostile environment in the world today.
